2 Kalmuck
(1) A coarse woollen cloth made from rough yarns and used for overcoats. The face is very shaggy to resemble a bear-skin. (2) A low grade heavy cotton fabric woven on the Continent also has the term Kalmuck applied to it. The cloth is woven on check looms in a low reed with strong grey cotton warp and two colours of weft. Only one colour appears on each side. Rather soft spun yarn is used for the weft and the fabric is raised on both sides. Construction 36 ends and 50 picks per inch. 16's warp hard spun and 4's to 6's weft. (3) Also low quality plain weave cotton cloth made in Persia. -

8 Bafpetas
Plain weave cloths, bleached or dyed blue. Blue bafts is the West African term for this style, and are plain cloths dyed blue. Usually low reed and pick and coarse yarns, such as 52 X 52, 20's / 18's. -
9 Barfoul
A native-made cotton fabric in Biguba on the River Gambia, and used for dresses. Low reed and pick and coarse yarns, native dyed. -
10 Bengal Linen
Is not a flax yarn, but a lustrous fabric which resembles linen. It is made in India from the fibres of the bolls of a native plant. Woven in plain and twill weaves, low reed and pick and medium counts about 12's to 16's. -
11 Cable Mattings
This term is given to a heavy linen fabric woven in the 2 X 2 twill weave. Several qualities are made and all of them are low reed and pick from coarse yams, such as 20 X 24 per inch, 6's/8's. -
12 Cable Webbing
A very heavy cotton fabric in 2 X 2 twill weave, in low reed and pick and using coarse yarns, such as 24 X 26 per inch, 2/8's warp, 2/10's weft. -
13 Cadis
Flock or wadding of any fibrous material used for stuffing. Also called Caddice. A cheap woollen fabric made in Languedoc, France, as late as the 18th century. It was of 2 X 2 twill weave, about 22 in. wide. Low reed and pick and coarse yarns. Slightly fulled and piece-dyed with Brazil wood. During the late 18th century Scottish makers produced a similar cloth with the same name, and the Highlanders made garments from it. -
14 Cangan
A plain cotton cloth made in China from coarse yarns. About 19-in. in width and 6 yard lengths. Low reed and pick and usually native grown cotton, 12's to 24's warp and weft. -
15 Forfars
A rather coarse and heavy linen cloth made with low reed and pick and heavy yarns, somewhat of the canvas type. Sold in the unbleached state. -
16 Grey Sheetings
GREY SHEETINGS (see Sheetings)Cotton sheetings are usually made in the 2 & 2 twill weave, and up to 120-in. wide. In waste sheeting the weft is condensor yarn. So-called American sheetings are 30-in. to 36-in. wide, low reed and pick and 30's to 36's warp, 16's to 24's weft, plain weave. These are not sheetings at all, but a plain cloth. The sheetings commonly used are: - Per inch width ends picks warp weft 64-in. 44 54 24's 17's 45-lb. 100 yd. 82-in. 44 54 21's 17's 55-lb. 100 yd. -
17 Khanr-Eya
Indian term for a heavy Saree, made 36-in. wide X 5 yards or 8 yards long, with a cross-border. About 7's warp and weft and low reed and pick. -
18 Lihafs
Native-made cotton fabrics in the Punjab. The yarn used, is hand spun from locally grown cotton. Very low reed and pick and coarse yarns. Printed in bright and vivid colours for use as floor covers. -
19 Loita
A poor quality plain cloth woven in a low reed and pick from coarse native spun cotton yarn. Used as a dhootie by the poorer classes in India. Usually about 40 ends and 40 picks per inch, 10's or 12's warp and 16's weft. -
20 Madras Goods
A term applied to Indian-made cotton fabrics plain weave, of 10's to 12's warp and weft and low reed and pick. The warp is white or black and the weft either brown or blue. They are made for export to East Africa and other markets requiring cheap serviceable cotton fabrics.
